Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 · Shanghai Arrival

Arrive in Shanghai. Airport transfer to hotel. Evening: Bund promenade walk — the most iconic view in China, best seen at dusk when the Pudong skyline lights up across the river.

Day 2 · Shanghai

Morning — Yu Garden & Old City Yu Garden: a 400-year-old classical garden in the heart of the city. Old City bazaar for souvenirs and local snacks. Mid-Pond Teahouse for a rest.

Afternoon — French Concession Tree-lined Wukang Road, Tianzifang art lanes. This neighbourhood feels unlike anywhere else in China — leafy, European, and full of excellent cafés and independent boutiques.

Evening — Optional: Huangpu River night cruise.

Day 3 · Suzhou

Bullet train from Shanghai Hongqiao (30 minutes). A full day in Suzhou:

Morning — Classical Gardens Humble Administrator's Garden (UNESCO) — the largest and most celebrated of Suzhou's gardens. Rockeries, lotus ponds, pavilions. Allow 2 hours.

Afternoon — Silk & Canal Suzhou Silk Embroidery Research Institute — watch master embroiderers at work, both sides of the silk simultaneously. Brief visit to the Panmen scenic area — ancient water gate and city wall section.

Optional Extension — Continue to Tongli Water Town (30 min from Suzhou). Ming-era courtyard homes, stone bridges, canal boats. Stay overnight or return to Shanghai.

Day 4 · Departure

Return to Shanghai by bullet train. Airport transfer, or free morning if evening flight.

Why Suzhou?

Suzhou was called the "Venice of the East" by Marco Polo in 1276 — and the description still holds. Unlike China's major cities, Suzhou has preserved its classical character. The canals, the gardens, and the silk tradition all survive intact.

Four of Suzhou's classical gardens are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Unlike the crowded gardens of Beijing, they remain quiet enough to sit, breathe, and properly see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 4 days enough? Four days gives you a good feel for both cities without rushing. Add a day in Suzhou or a Hangzhou extension if you want more depth.

Can we add Hangzhou? Yes — Hangzhou is 45 minutes from Shanghai by bullet train. Add a 5th day for West Lake, Longjing tea village and Lingyin Temple.

What's the best season? March–May for spring blossoms. September–November for clear skies and foliage. Suzhou's lotus season (July) is beautiful but hot.
