Beijing Imperial Deep Dive
Five days in the capital — history, hutongs, and the Great Wall at your pace
Tour Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 · Arrival
Airport meet & greet. Private transfer to hotel. No sightseeing on day one — your guide orients you to the neighbourhood, recommends a local dinner spot within walking distance.
Day 2 · Imperial Core
Morning: Tiananmen Square at sunrise — before crowds, before heat. Then straight into the Forbidden City. Your guide knows which halls to skip and which corridors are empty. Two hours minimum in the imperial garden.
Afternoon: Temple of Heaven — the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the Echo Wall, locals doing everything from ballroom dancing to kite-flying in the park. Easy pace.
Evening: Wangfujing pedestrian street for Beijing snacks and browsing.
Day 3 · Great Wall
Early departure for Mutianyu — the section most guides recommend for good reason: restored battlements, far fewer visitors than Badaling, dramatic mountain scenery. Cable car up. Optional toboggan down.
Afternoon: Mutianyu village lunch, then Red Snail Temple on the way back.
Evening: Free. Your guide recommends Peking duck options at every price point.
Day 4 · Summer Palace & Hutongs
Morning: Summer Palace — arrive early for mist on Kunming Lake. Marble Boat, Long Corridor, Foxhill pavilions. Optional boat ride.
Afternoon: Hutong neighbourhood by rickshaw — Nanluoguxiang, Drum Tower, Shichahai lake bars. Hands-on dumpling-making lesson at a local family's courtyard home.
Day 5 · Departure
Late check-out assistance. Transfer to Beijing Capital Airport or train station.
Optional add-on for early flights: 798 Art District on the way to the airport — 90 minutes, contemporary Chinese art and good coffee.
Is This Tour Right for You?
- Just Beijing: Ideal if you have limited time or prefer depth over breadth.
- Extend it: Add 2–3 days to visit Xi'an (bullet train, 5.5 hrs) — see the Classic China for Seniors itinerary.
- Pace: No day starts before 08:30. Afternoon rest built in on Days 2 and 4.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Great Wall accessible for seniors or those with knee issues? Mutianyu has a cable car and a chairlift. The restored section has good handrails. We assess on enquiry and suggest the best access point for your mobility level.
Can I do this in 3 days instead of 5? Yes — we do a compressed 3-day Beijing itinerary covering the essentials. Contact us and we'll send the adjusted plan.
What's the best time of year for Beijing? April–May and September–October. Summer is very hot and crowded; winter is cold but the Great Wall in snow is extraordinary if you're prepared.
