Suggested Itineraries

2-Day Highlights

Day 1 — Imperial Core Tiananmen Square at sunrise before the crowds. Forbidden City with private guide commentary. Afternoon at the Temple of Heaven — arrive early to see locals practising tai chi and ballroom dancing.

Day 2 — Great Wall & Hutongs Morning at Mutianyu Great Wall section — less crowded, restored, with cable car option (ideal for seniors). Afternoon return via a Hutong neighbourhood for rickshaw ride and dumpling-making experience.

3-Day Deeper Beijing

Add:

Day 3 — Summer Palace & 798 Morning at the Summer Palace — lakeside pavilions and Long Corridor. Optional afternoon at 798 Art District for contemporary Chinese art.

4-Day Beijing + Day Trips

Add one of:

  • Ming Tombs (UNESCO, 1 hour from city)
  • Chengde Mountain Resort (3-hour drive, stunning imperial garden)

Key Attractions

Forbidden City — The world's largest palace complex. 600 years old, 72 hectares. Allow 3 hours minimum. Your guide brings meaning to what would otherwise be a beautiful maze.

Great Wall — Mutianyu — Our recommended section. Restored, uncrowded, with gondola and toboggan options. A 90-minute drive from central Beijing.

Temple of Heaven — Where emperors prayed for good harvests. The circular Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is one of China's most photographed structures.

Summer Palace — 700 acres of gardens, temples and a large lake on the city's western edge. An afternoon could easily become a full day.

Practical Information

Getting around: Private car with driver throughout. No subway needed.

Senior notes: Forbidden City involves significant walking on stone paving — we plan rest breaks. Great Wall cable car eliminates the steepest climb. Pace is entirely in your control.

Best season: Spring (Apr–May) and autumn (Sep–Oct). Avoid summer heat and winter cold.

Avoid: Chinese national holidays — Tiananmen and Forbidden City become extremely crowded.
